An orphanage in Tanzania
Elke Cole is my friend from Vancouver Island. She is an architect and builder who builds houses out of cob (earth). This winter 2008, Elke will begin construction of a new project in Tanzania – an orphanage for children whose parents have died of AIDS. Elke says:

“In Africa the Baobab Home has acquired land now and we are going to plan and construct the first building for them this winter, an orphanage for babies whose parents have died of AIDS. You can look up www.tzkids.org and read more. During my time there in 2007 I worked with local builders on a house for Mama Rehema, an opportunity for me to test some materials and build relationships. This time we will build with earth, keeping the use of wood to a minimum. I will also use my permaculture training to set out planning for the land in terms of food production and organization of activities.

I am now asking you to support my work with a cash donation.

The goal is to raise at least $15,000, which in combination with funds already raised through the Earth Rising Foundation will provide the money to build and to cover travel and basic overhead.

That means $100-200  per person—and you could rally some friends to do this together. Your generosity will bring smiles to many faces along the way."

(Please add Elke Tanzania to your payment description.)

[In 2007, donations by two SFU professors paid for just over a fifth of this home for Mama Rehema, a foster mother who is raising two orphaned children from her village. The house cost approximately US$500.]
